How often to change the oil on a Honda/Acura?
I have always been one to have my oil changed every 3,000 miles. Sure, there have been a few times when I was busy with whatever and let it go till 3500, but that's about it. I have a friend who has owned several Hondas and Acuras for long periods of time, one was a early 90's Civic that he took to nearly 300,000 miles. He gets his oil changed every 5,000 miles and says I'm wasting my money by sticking to the 3,000 mile rule, he says that's a myth spread by oil change centers and car dealers to increase their business, kind of like Hallmark convincing all of our wives and/or girlfriends that Sweetest Day is a national holiday that damn well better not be missed. He does check his oil level every 1,000 miles or so, but other than that, he sticks to the 5,000 mile idea. I always thought that if you had a pushrod-type engine, like a Chevy V8 truck motor, that you could get away with leaving your oil in longer, but that our Acuras, with their overhead cams and interference design motors require new oil more often? What do you think?

what kind of oil and filter u use also determines how ofter u should change ur oil. and what kind of driving u do.
me, 2-3k mobil 1 syn and mobil 1 fiter on my cl-s6. but that car has been through hell and back, and is my track car
02tl-s mobil 1 syn and honda oil filter. grandma driving (if not even slower) every 5-7k miles.
but ppl have gone 10-15k on mobil one extend and mobil 1 filter.
get an oil analysis to see what kind of condition ur engine is in.

straight from the owner's manual:
de-iced roads.
what are all those trips down to the local store or in between stores during errands are??
hot, it can easily hit 110 degrees (at the road surface) especially with black asphalt during the summer,
most people drive in stop and go traffic when they commute
roof racks people leave them on all year round here (btw i don't even have one)
mountainous terrian, any body like to mountion bike , skiing, snowboarding, or camping (alot of people like to warp their brakes too, or at least get them really toasty from not downshifting)
muddy roads don't apply so much to honda's but dirt roads do, and just think of how dirty your car gets
de-iced roads, pretty much anywhere it snows on a regular basis, and i know when the snow melts there is alot of gravel/dirt on roads afterwards which is almost just like a dirt road cause they like to gravel/sand here more then de-iceing (also does not hurt ethier to wash the undercarraige every wash ethier, especially after it snows, to help clean off that salt)
also alot cheaper to pay for a couple of extra oil changes then it is to pay for a new engine
Follow the Severe Conditions
Maintenance Schedule if you
drive your car under
one or more of the following
conditions:
Driving less than 5 miles (8
km) per trip or, in freezing
temperatures, driving less
than 10 miles (16 km) per trip.
Driving in extremely hot
[over 90°F (32°C)] conditions.
Extensive idling or long
periods of stop-and-go driving,
such as a taxi or a commecial
delivery vehicle.
Trailer towing, driving with a
roof rack, or driving in
mountainous conditions.
Driving on muddy, dusty, or

I wouldn't say 90% then
It certainly doesn't apply to me or quite a few people I know in my region (Portland Oregon)
But you do have a point, people who primarily do stop n' go driving should certainly get their oil changed more frequently.

and certian areas are definetly worse then others
and ty for the point bit, but yeah a quality oil and filter (especially one with a anti-siphon valve in it, to help prevent dry starts) defintly helps in being able to extend your oil changes and not causeing damage

I'm every 10k miles with mobil 1 oil & filter, but I do 95% highway traveling and stay cruising around 2200rpms all the time when I'm driving.
My car would eat about 1qt of oil over that time period and the oil always looked pretty good.
My wife's G35 goes about 6k miles and using the same mobil 1 filter and oil is much darker than my oil in the CL at 10k miles.

Wow, I've never had a thread get so many responses so quickly. I think I'll stick to my 3,000 or so miles, the 3750 from the severe maintenance schedule sounds OK, too. One thing which I have heard before is that engines like ours, with the overhead cams, interference design, etc. require more frequent changes than the pushrod style motors like a Chevy V8. Not sure why that is, maybe just cause there's more moving parts or something.
In defense of my friend who says I'm wasting my money on every 3000 miles, he has had long life out of all of his Honda/Acuras without any major problems engine-wise.
It also makes me wonder when you go to an oil change place and its one price, maybe $25-$30 for a oil change with regular oil and somewhat more for synthetic, if its worth it to put in the synthetic if you can safely get some extra mileage. Weird, but whenever I go over 3000 miles, I get this feeling like I'm really doing something bad to the car.

and like you said you have this funny feeling when you go over, so proably be better to just keep it at 3k for your piece of mind

My car USE to get 30mpg on the highway and USE to run great. (till current issue)
With over 150k miles on the car, I'm not saying that the seals are still pristine.
It depends on where the oil is going which can tell you how severe the problem is.

if OP is staying with dino, 3-5k is fine with any old filter. over that, and you'll need to look into better filters. check out bobistheoilguy.com. Theres lots oil and filter information on there.
personally, I run 10k on full synthetic with purolator pureone or similar high quality filter.

I use Synthetic Mobil 1 or Valvoline super syn. Which ever is on sale. I use the Puralator Pure 1 Filter and change mine every 5000 to 5500 miles. Seem to be just fine.

All we can do is give our intervals and the reason why. Its up to the individual to determine whats the appropriate mileage to change the oil. Every car is different, like every driver is different.
If your really concerned then get an oil analysis done. I havent seen any intervals here that would cause me concern.

Waste of money. Standard 5W20 & Acura filter every 7500.
BTW my car doesn't use any oil & I drive it hard, & I live where it's above 80 95% of the year, & I sit in traffic sometimes, & I do 80mph+ all the time, & I drive on the occasional dirt road.
The CLS engine is great, & doesn't need frequent oil changes.
Now a lesser engine is a different story.

I change my oil every 5-6K with dino oil. I have access to a SOS lab so I already know that I can easily go 7500 miles on an oil change and that is regular dino oil.
using anything other than straight up high quality dino oil is a waste of money and changing our oil every 3K miles is a waste of money as well, 3K oil changes are for cast iron engines that are carburated as those were hard on oil due to excessive fuel wash down during cold start and the reaction between the cast iron and the oil made the oil turn acidic over time.....
I drive about 12K a year
3.5 days a week work at 53 miles round trip mostly fwy and 2 trips to michigan for 4K miles..... - summer months when I ride a vino 125 to work and back
using straight dino oil and regular filters I have never had an engine die due to oil related issues and i have had several cars go well past 150K and 1 past 200K and one past 380K

I know our engine is fine with the longer intervals...but my point is, it's can only be beneficial to do a change earlier than later. and the more black that's in the oil the more ur engine is being lubricated with less quality.
So for all those who do early changes, ur engine will only thank you in the long run.

I change mine every 5k-6k miles, and even then when I checked my oil (before it was changed), I felt I could have gone closer to another 1k. It wasn't close to black.
and the dealer I got the oil change done at, said around 5k miles is ideal. Seriously, every 3k miles is a waste, IMO.

i change my oil with 5w20 mobile one and use an oem filter changing it every 7000-10000 miles. My last TL went well over the 200k mark and my cl is just right behind it with 173,000 miles. I drive my car hard revving well over 5k on the daily. My motor still runs strong no problems.

I just bought mine a couple weeks ago from an Acura dealer with exactly 60k, the oil change sticker says to replace at 65k, fwiw...but they used a syn blend, so I might go get full synthetic in it a little sooner.

What do you guys think about this oil? Change frequencies that is. I was about to buy some. I was thinking of changing at 15k instead. I never bought into Mobils extended stuff, but this is amsoil and I know they know their stuff...
