Downsizing makes another victim as Mercedes is waving goodbye to the V8 inside the G500. The Final Edition is the last time the German luxury brand will install the eight-cylinder engine in the G500, with the 2024 model year bringing a smaller six-cylinder powertrain instead. This swan song comes three decades after the launch of the 500 GE V8, the original G-Class with a brawny V8.

It can be had in Obsidian Black, Opalith White Magno, and Olive Magno – each capped at 500 units. All get a "Final Edition" decal along with a chrome contour for the spare wheel cover. Mercedes fits the off-roader with 20-inch AMG wheels that have a double-spoke design and a body-colored finish if you choose the Olive Magno paint. If you go with one of the other two colors, the wheels are black. Rounding off the changes on the outside are the embossed logos on the doorknobs.

Open the doors and you'll be greeted by the "G" logo and "Stronger than time" text projected onto the floor. The latter message is also applied to the indoor car cover that comes bundled with the last G500 V8. The door sill trims and the grab handles have "Final Edition" lettering, which is also found on the back of the key.

Mercedes has bathed the cabin in leather as nearly every surface is covered in Nappa leather. That even includes the cargo compartment and the panel for the seat adjustment switches. To sweeten the pot, Mercedes adds the Burmester surround sound system, two-tone seats, and a leather headliner with the center section colored to echo the center of the seats while having the same diamond stitching.

There aren't any changes underneath the hood where the twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8 continues to make 416 horsepower (310 kilowatts) and 610 Newton-meters (449 pound-feet) of torque. Mercedes will make these final V8-powered G500 units from September until March 2024.

The combustion-engined G-Class is sticking around for the time being and will be complemented by a fully electric EQG on the same platform, complete with boxy styling.

In case a regular Mercedes-AMG G 63 wasn’t grand enough, Mercedes just introduced a special edition version of the model named the “Grand Edition.” There will only be 1,000 sold around the world, and they’ll all be outfitted in the same spec as you see in the gallery above.

The exterior of every Grand Edition is painted in Manufaktur Night Black Magno. That black paint is paired with a bunch of Kalahari Gold Magno accents. In all, Mercedes applies that gold finish to the front and rear bumper inlays, the underside protection, AMG logo, Mercedes star, Affalterbach emblem on the hood and the ring around the spare tire cover. A slightly different gold that Mercedes calls Tech Gold is used for the 22-inch forged wheels and the side graphics.

Hop inside, and the Grand Edition features a black interior with gold accents throughout. Gold stitching can be seen everywhere, from the seats to the floor mats and dash. The grab handle on the passenger side of the dash has a carbon inlay and bears a “Grand Edition” badge. To finish things off, every Grand Edition comes with a unique car cover

Mercedes hasn’t released pricing or details for the U.S. market yet, but we suspect the Grand Edition will hit the market as a 2024 model year vehicle and come with a notable price bump over a standard G 63, which starts at $180,150.

Mercedes-Benz is readying an update for the 2025 G-Class and will implement a new kinetic suspension inspired by the advanced system of the current SL and GT models.

This new suspension system should result in dramatically improved comfort and handling. It will work by replacing traditional anti-roll bars with an interconnected damping system with electro-hydraulic flow valves that adjust rebound and compression on the fly. Adjustments are made based on a series of factors like speed, steering wheel angle, body movement, and road conditions.

Further adding to the complexity of the system is the fact that when one wheel compresses, the piston inside the damper will extend upwards and send hydraulic fluid across to the other side to support the rebound of the opposing damper. Controlling the stiffness of the dampers are two accumulators filled with nitrogen gas that collect excess hydraulic fluid and send it to flow valves as needed.

Wards Auto recently had the opportunity to ride shotgun in a 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class with the system. Not only does it improve the road credentials of the G-Class but it also works while off-roading and improves wheel articulation.

“It gives us greater breadth of ability between the various driving modes,” Mercedes-AMG head of suspension development Ralf Haug said. “We’re able to go softer at one end and firmer at the other end of the spectrum, than we are with the more conventional suspension and the anti-roll bars that we use today. It also offers faster and more fluid response with greater body control and the foundation for than we have now. We saw the advantages it brought to our sports cars and immediately began thinking what it could do for our off-road models.”

The publication notes that the prototype it was in seemed to have better handling than the old G-Class while also offering a more comfortable ride. It also does a good job of minimizing body roll and has the added benefit of improving off-road traction.

This trick suspension system was most successfully used by Citroen in the World Rally Championship during the early 2000s before the FIA banned it. It was brought to the market by Tenneco through its Monroe brand and is currently used by both McLaren and Rivian.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has long been regarded as an automotive icon and is now once again underpinning its leading position among luxury off-road vehicles. The all-new models excel under all conditions - with improved performance thanks to electrified drive systems, modern driver assistance systems, increased comfort and advanced digitalisation. Established in 1979, the model series now offers the most diverse drive portfolio of all time and almost limitless customisation options. At the same time, it retains its unmistakable off-road character and unique appearance. At its market launch the all-new G-Class will be available at a price starting from 122,808 euros.

"The all-new G-Class raises the bar for real adventure on and off the road yet again. With an electrified drive portfolio, our pioneering MBUX infotainment system and additional comfort and off-road functions, it's poised to continue its success story as THE Geländewagen. The all-new G-Class combines an outstanding driving experience with a state-of-the-art digital experience." Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer

The all-new G-Class sets standards in the off-road segment

The off-road icon is based on the tried-and-tested ladder-frame concept and features three mechanical differential locks and LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction as well as a rigid rear axle and independent front suspension. High ground clearance and long-travel suspension form the basis for the off-road characteristics of the all-new G-Class. The numbers speak for themselves:
  • Up to 100% gradeability on suitable surfaces
  • Ground clearance between the axles of at least 241 mm
  • Maximum fording depth of 70 cm for water and mud
  • Stable driving on sideward slopes of up to 35°
  • Approach and departure angles of 31° at the front and 30° at the rear (without trailer hitch)
Off the beaten track, the new OFFROAD COCKPIT provides an overview of the relevant data for off-road driving in both the driver and media displays, as well as functions to support off-road driving.

The all-new G-Class is more versatile than ever before

In addition to the all-new performance off-roader from Mercedes-AMG, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 450 d and the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 500 are also available to choose from. All engines are now fully electrified. As mild hybrids with 48-volt technology, they offer increased performance with reduced fuel consumption. The first fully electric variant of the G-Class will round out the model portfolio at a later date.

The new G-Class evolves with the times and yet remains true to itself

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has not significantly changed its appearance for around 45 years. The exterior design of the all-new models is only subtly modified. Visible changes include a radiator grille with four instead of the previous three horizontal louvres and front and rear bumpers. The front bumpers have a renewed squircle look. New A-pillar cladding and a spoiler lip on the roof edge contribute to improved aerodynamics and increased acoustic comfort.

The interior is luxurious and functional. With the integration of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, the all-new G-Class is more digital than ever before. On request, KEYLESS-GO, temperature-controlled cupholders, the Burmester® 3D surround sound system and MBUX High-End Rear-Seat Entertainment system ensure increased comfort. There are also additional and enhanced safety and assistance systems. The MANUFAKTUR range for extensive customisation of the interior and exterior has been expanded once again.

Iconic design - unmistakable shape, modern technology

An unmistakable, angular shape is the hallmark of the G-Class. And its iconic design remains largely unchanged even during the latest developments. Classic details continue to be characteristic features. These include the distinctive door handles and the characteristic door-closing sound, robust exterior protective trim, the exposed spare wheel on the rear door and protruding indicator lights. The new radiator grille has four horizontal louvres instead of the previous three. In addition, there are redesigned front and rear bumpers with the front ones featuring a new squircle look. The reversing camera has a new position in the centre of the bumper above the license plate holder. A wiper fluid nozzle is fitted to the side of the reversing camera in case it gets dirty. This deploys when the driver activates the rear window washer system.

The conventionally powered models also incorporate some elements that were developed for the first all-electric version of the off-road legend. Specifically, new A-pillar cladding, a spoiler lip on the roof edge and new insulation materials contribute to improved aerodynamics and increased acoustic comfort. The new models come as standard with aerodynamically optimised 45.7-centimetre (18-inch) alloy wheels in a five-twin-spoke design and LED high-performance headlights. The paint colour sodalite blue metallic is now available. There is also a choice of new wheel designs in sizes from 45.7 to 50.8 centimetres (18 to 20 inches).

Customers can emphasise the off-road character of their all-new G-Class with the PROFESSIONAL Line Exterior. The package includes stone-guard grilles for the headlights, mud flaps and 45.7-centimetre (18-inch) all-terrain tyres. The EXCLUSIVE Line Exterior, on the other hand, emphasises the exclusive character of the vehicle with a radiator grille in silver chrome, MULTIBEAM LED headlights, a spare-wheel ring in stainless steel and side running boards. The AMG Line gives the all-new G-Class a decidedly sporty touch. Here, the dynamic appearance is characterised by wheel-arch extensions, 50.8-centimetre (20-inch) AMG alloy wheels and a multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather. The Night Package, which includes sporty, expressive design elements in black, is also available.

The interior - impressive quality and pioneering design language

In the interior of the all-new G-Class, off-road character meets top-class equipment. Numerous exterior design elements can be found in the interior. For example, the side air vents take the shape of the round headlights and are now also available with illumination. The grab handle on the passenger side is still present. Meanwhile, the switches for the three differential locks remain central elements of the redesigned off-road control centre. The latter now also offers the option of quick access - for example to the OFFROAD COCKPIT. The latest-generation multifunction steering wheel with touch control surfaces is upholstered in nappa leather as standard. The ambient lighting and comprehensive leather upholstery complete the ambience.

With the EXCLUSIVE Line Interior, customers can further enhance the atmosphere of wellbeing inside their all-new G-Class. Among other things, it includes an expanded choice of upholstery in nappa leather. There is also ambient lighting for the air vents and the Burmester® 3D surround sound system with an illuminated satellite loudspeaker in the headliner. Meanwhile, the SUPERIOR Line Interior transforms the cabin into a luxurious lounge. The Active Multicontour Seat Plus package, upholstery in nappa leather and exclusive elements and decorative stitching in a diamond design contribute to this.

MBUX infotainment system - the new G-Class is more connected than ever

The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system with 31.2-centimetre (12.3-inch) driver and media displays including touch control is in all model variants for the first time. Smartphone integration connects the mobile phone wirelessly to the MBUX multimedia system via Android Auto Wireless® or Apple CarPlay™. This allows occupants to make optimum use of their mobile phone's functions. They also enjoy the benefits of digital radio (DAB+) with MBUX. A USB-C port enables connections to other mobile devices.

MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation is also part of the standard equipment of the all-new G-Class. The system superimposes graphical navigation and traffic information onto live images on the media display. This can help drivers find their way even in complex traffic situations and to reach their destination quickly, safely and stress-free. The system also provides support at traffic lights: it displays the current traffic light colour, thus assisting when visibility of the signal is restricted.

MBUX also brings voice assistance into the all-new G-Class that is capable of dialogue and learning. Certain actions can now be triggered without the "Hey Mercedes" wake term. The voice assistant also has around 20 voice commands created exclusively for use in the all-new G-Class.

New features for even more convenience

If desired, the interior of the all-new G-Class can be upgraded with additional comfort features. These include temperature-controlled cupholders, a wireless charging system for mobile devices and the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment system. The latter comprises two fully integrated 29.5-centimetre (11.6-inch) touch displays, which ensure rear passengers also remain fully entertained during a journey. Thanks to the connection to the MBUX multimedia system they can watch films, surf the internet and access trip information, among other things. If required, users can move content interactively from the displays in the second seat row to the media display up front. They can also play their own media via various interfaces.

The all-new G-Class is optionally available with KEYLESS-GO. This allows the side doors and rear door to be locked and unlocked simply by pressing the button on the door handle. There is no need to hold the vehicle key for this. Instead, it can remain in a pocket. The vehicle can also be started conveniently at the touch of a button - without inserting the key into the ignition. The only requirement is for the key to be inside the vehicle with the driver. A dashcam is also available on request. It can film the traffic in front of the vehicle and records the time and speed. This allows drivers to document an accident, for example, or capture scenic routes and landscapes. They can view the video material either on their computer at home or on the media display in the vehicle (when stationary).

With the optional Burmester® 3D surround sound system, the all-new G-Class offers unrivalled sound quality. It features the immersive Dolby Atmos® audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth. The system transforms the all-new G-Class into a state-of-the-art concert hall on wheels. An additional, illuminated loudspeaker is integrated into the headliner. Six additional channels are now available on the side of the amplifier, audibly enabling better frequency separation and sound positioning.

MANUFAKTUR - the individualisation programme with more than a million possible combinations

Paint colour, spare-wheel ring, seat trim, decorative stitching, instrument panel and much more - the MANUFAKTUR customisation programme enables owners to make their G-Class unique. When choosing exclusive colour combinations, individual contrasts and materials, the possibilities are almost unlimited. The range has recently been expanded once again. Among other things, the two-tone leather interior in MANUFAKTUR catalan beige/black is available for the first time. In addition, a grab handle with "MANUFAKTUR" lettering and trim is available in combination with MANUFAKTUR leather. The MANUFAKTUR full leather package is also available for the all-new G-Class. Almost the entire interior is then covered in nappa leather. This extends from the headliner to the cladding of the A, B, C and D pillars through to the seat backrest. The headliner also has a centre panel in trim colour with a diamond design.

Exclusive vehicle handover at the birthplace of the G-Class

Since 2023, G-Class customers have been able to experience an unforgettable day at the G-Class Experience Centre in Graz when they collect their vehicles from the factory. Pure driving pleasure awaits them on a 100,000-square-metre site. They can test the versatility of the off-road icon with specially provided vehicles on the on- and off-road course. The supporting programme also includes a tour of production at MAGNA Steyr, with fascinating insights into the production process. The highlight is the vehicle handover - the new G-Class presented in a glass cube. This is followed by a detailed vehicle briefing. The package for two also includes an exclusive dinner, an overnight hotel stay in the centre of Graz with breakfast and a personal shuttle service. Those wishing to book G-Class factory delivery should contact their authorised Mercedes-Benz sales partner.

Body and suspension - the G-Class is and remains the GELÄNDEWAGEN

The all-new G-Class benefits from around 45 years of experience and expertise in the off-road segment. The off-road vehicle icon continues to rely on proven ladder-frame construction, three mechanical differential locks and the combination of double wishbone independent front wheel suspension and a rigid rear axle. High ground clearance and long-travel suspension form the basis for the off-road characteristics. The following values speak for themselves:
  • Up to 100% gradeability on suitable surfaces
  • Ground clearance between the axles of at least 241 mm
  • Maximum fording depth of 70 cm for water and mud
  • Stable driving on sideward slopes of up to 35°
  • Approach and departure angles of 31° at the front and 30° at the rear (without trailer hitch)
  • Breakover angle of 26°
The suspension on the all-new G-Class includes adaptive adjustable damping as standard, which was only available as an option on the previous models. This provides even more control off-road. The dampers compensate for uneven ground even better than passive dampers. With roll and pitch stabilisation, the system continuously regulates the damper characteristics depending on the driving situation and automatically reduces body movements. The components of the adaptive adjustable dampers are designed to withstand extreme conditions such as surging water, driving through mud, flying rocks and dirt.

The tried-and-tested electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering system comes as standard. It consumes less energy than a hydraulically assisted system. Depending on the selected driving programme, it provides a comfortable or sporty steering feel on the road. Off-road, it provides precise feedback with plenty steering assistance. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard. The front brake discs are 354 millimetres in diameter and 32 millimetres thick. At the rear, the diameter is 345 millimetres and the thickness is 22 millimetres.

DYNAMIC SELECT with three additional off-road driving programmes

With DYNAMIC SELECT, the vehicle characteristics of the all-new G-Class can be adjusted at the touch of a button and in just a few seconds. The system changes the driving characteristics of the engine, transmission, suspension, ESP® and steering. The on-road driving programmes "Comfort", "Sport", "Eco" and "Individual" are easy to set using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch.

Three additional driving programmes are available in the all-new G-Class for off-road driving. "Trail" offers optimised handling on gentler terrain with loose surfaces - for example on dirt roads or gravel. The "Rock" driving programme is designed for driving on medium and difficult, uneven terrain with hard, rocky surfaces. The suspension set-up and steering settings are designed to be firm. As a third off-road option, "Sand" offers improved driving dynamics through agilising control interventions. The ESP® is specially designed for sandy surfaces and provides greater safety during dynamic driving, for example when braking. Drivers can also set the off-road driving programmes using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch.

Everything in view - the new OFFROAD COCKPIT

The redesigned off-road control unit takes drivers directly to the new OFFROAD COCKPIT. This provides an overview of the most relevant data for off-road driving in both the driver and media displays. It also offers functions to support off-road driving. The content is displayed in various tiles, which can be changed using the direction arrows or by swiping. There are also buttons for quick access to certain vehicle functions that are relevant to off-road driving. The data displayed includes an artificial horizon, positioning, compass, altitude, steering angle of the front axle, torque, power, tyre pressure and temperature as well as the status of the differential locks.

For an even more comfortable off-road driving experience - the "transparent bonnet"

The "transparent bonnet" function can be called up via the off-road menu in the central display. In conjunction with the 360° camera, it enables a virtual view under the front of the vehicle. For the camera view of the "transparent bonnet" in the media display, the vehicle combines the images from the front camera and the two exterior mirror cameras. In addition, a visualisation of the lane helps to select the optimal route. This enables drivers of the new G-Class to react quickly if necessary - for example, when encountering obstacles such as rubble or boulders. The function also helps to optimally assess crests, embankments and depressions if they are no longer visible through the windscreen because the angle is too steep.

The most diverse model portfolio of all time - engine and transmission options

The engine portfolio for the all-new G-Class is fully electrified. As mild hybrids with integrated starter-generators (ISG) and 48-volt on-board electrical systems, they offer increased performance with reduced fuel consumption. Thanks to electrification, the new models also offer improved response and greater comfort. Further models in addition to the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 are the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 500 and the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 450 d.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G 500 is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine with twin turbocharging via an exhaust-gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor. The petrol engine produces 330 kW (449 hp) and provides a maximum torque of 560 Nm. The ISG briefly delivers an additional 15 kW (20 hp) of output and 200 Nm of torque. It also feeds the 48-volt on-board electrical system. The range of engines is rounded off by the six-cylinder diesel in the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 450 d. The unit delivers 270 kW (+15 kW) (367 hp + 20 hp). The torque is 750 (+200) Nm.

Proven automatic transmission

Power transmission is provided by the 9G-TRONIC torque-converter automatic transmission, which is specially adapted to the requirements of the off-road icon. The wide spread of the transmission makes driving comfortable and quiet, especially at low engine speeds. At the same time it helps reduce fuel consumption. The mechanics and the hydraulic control unit ensure fast, smooth and comfortable gear changes. They also enable rapid intermediate spurts of acceleration. Three speed sensors allow for what is known as skip shifting, in which - depending on the driving situation - several gears are skipped. The shift behaviour depends on the selected driving programme. As is usual with Mercedes-Benz automatic transmissions, drivers can also change gears manually using the DIRECT SELECT shift paddles on the steering wheel.

In the ECO driving programme, for example, the ECO start/stop function aids economical driving by switching off the engine when the vehicle is stationary. The coasting function also helps to save fuel. The transmission clutch opens as soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator pedal. As a result, engine speed drops to idle, and driving resistance reduced by the engine's compression and friction forces in trailing throttle. The all-new G-Class then "coasts" and briefly utilises its own kinetic energy for propulsion. Traction is restored as soon as the accelerator or brake pedal is depressed again.

Transfer case with off-road reduction

The transfer case is configured so that 40 percent of the drive torque is transferred to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear axle. The permanent all-wheel drive ensures excellent traction. The off-road gear reduction significantly increases the torque on the driven wheels when travelling off-road. At the same time, it reduces top speed and increases traction. This enables the all-new G-Class to master even very difficult terrain. The off-road reduction can be engaged in the "N" transmission mode via the LOW RANGE switch up to a speed of 40 km/h. The ratio of the transfer case then changes from 1.00 in the HIGH RANGE road-driving setting to 2.93. It is possible to change from LOW RANGE to HIGH RANGE up to 70 km/h.

The intelligent multi-plate clutch ensures enduring manoeuvrability. It behaves like an automatically controlled limited slip differential and regulates the vehicle's behaviour while driving. It switches to a fixed lock with 100% locking effect when the switch for the centre differential lock is actuated.

The locks on the front and rear differentials are designed as normal differential locks with 100% locking effect. They operate purely electromechanically and are fully networked. All locks can be engaged individually while driving in both LOW RANGE and HIGH RANGE. The vehicle automatically switches to the "Rock" off-road driving programme when the locks are engaged. The switches for the three differential locks allow drivers to recognise which of the locks is activated at any time. The status is also shown in the media display.

A high level of safety - additional and enhanced driver assistance systems

Thanks to additional and further developed latest-generation assistance and safety systems, the all-new G-Class is one of the safest vehicles in its segment. Active Brake Assist supports drivers as standard. The system uses its sensors to identify a risk of collision with vehicles travelling in front, crossing or oncoming. In the event of an imminent collision, the system can warn the driver visually and acoustically. If braking is too weak, it can also assist by increasing the braking force to the appropriate level. And if there is no reaction, it can initiate autonomous emergency braking. Active Lane Keeping Assist is also included as standard. The system can help the driver to stay in their lane. The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system is also on board as standard. It can recognise critical driving situations at an early stage and initiate precautionary protective measures. These include, for example, reversible belt tensioning or automatic shutting of open side windows or the sliding glass roof. Active Park Assist with PARKTRONIC is also included as standard. The system can actively assist with backing into a space and recognise suitable parking spaces at a speed of up to 35 km/h.

The optional Technology Package bundles all available assistance systems for maximum safety and relaxed driving. DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist helps drivers to maintain a safe distance to other vehicles, among other things. The package also assists drivers in urban traffic. For example, the exit warning function can alert drivers to approaching cyclists. Blind Spot Assist can help avoid accidents when changing lanes by means of visual and acoustic warning signals. Traffic Sign Assist keeps an eye on the applicable speed regulations and reminds the driver of them. Meanwhile, the Parking Package with 360° camera assists with parking and manoeuvring. The all-round view and assisted parking make manoeuvring easier - the central display clearly shows the vehicle's immediate surroundings. Four cameras (front, rear and on both sides) provide the images. These are combined to create a virtual 360-degree view from a bird's eye perspective. In addition, the media display specifically shows different viewing angles.

In combination with the visual and acoustic cues of the standard PARKTRONIC, drivers can have a good overview even in confusing situations.

The following systems are now available in the all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class:

Active Steering Assist

Active Steering Assist supports drivers in speeds up to 160 km/h with moderate steering intervention when in the centre of a lane. This provides a high degree of relief, especially on monotonous stretches of road.

Active Emergency Stop Assist

Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle in its own lane to a standstill if it recognises that the driver is no longer intervening in the driving situation. In addition, a short electric PRE-SAFE®-belt tensioning and short brake jerk provide final warnings before the brakes are applied.

Route-based speed adjustment

The system helps drivers to adapt their speed to the route. Before bends, junctions, roundabouts, toll stations and turnoffs, the vehicle automatically reduces speed in combination with DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist and then accelerates again.

The adaptive shock absorbers are equipped with two hydraulic connections - one on the compression side of the damper and the other on the rebound side. Damper chambers on all four wheels are connected via hydraulic lines and the control valves of the adaptive dampers.

The interconnection of the four suspension struts and pressure regulation of the pump and control valves allow a very wide roll spring rate spread with reduced roll movements. During dynamic cornering, the hydraulics reduce the roll angle and therefore loss of camber. The resulting high camber stiffness and reduced body movement enable the AMG G63 to turn-in very precisely. The system also compensates for individual obstacles that would otherwise lead to rolling movements, which improves both ride comfort and handling.

The AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension also improves wheel articulation. This enables the wheels to maintain contact with the driving surface even when the vehicle is heavily articulated. This leads to a significant increase in traction, climbing ability and off-road comfort, as well as reduced strain on both the vehicle and driver.

Two additional off-road drive modes are available as part of the optional AMG Offroad Package PRO. "AMG Traction PRO" generates maximum traction in the "Rock" and "Sand" drive programs by means of wheel-selective braking torque control depending on the road surface. In addition, the degree of locking of the electronically controlled differential lock can be adjusted in stages depending on the situation. In order to activate AMG Traction PRO, drivers must first select the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction and activate manual shifting of the transmission.

"AMG Active Balance Control," the second additional off-road drive mode, supplements the functions of the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension in all three off-road drive programs. This allows the roll stiffness of the vehicle to be adjusted from low to rigid depending on the road surface and driving situation. Drivers can choose from three different settings. While "LOW" provides a comfortable suspension setup, it is significantly stiffer in "MID" and very stiff in "HIGH". This significantly improves the vehicle's body control, contact with the driving surface as well as traction off-road.

AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive adjustable damping is fitted standard on the new AMG G63. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system continuously adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current driving situation and road conditions. This improves driving safety and ride comfort. The damping on each wheel is adjusted individually via separate valves for rebound and compression in each damper. Three distinct damper maps can be selected ("Comfort," "Sport" or "Sport+") with a noticeable differentiation between ride comfort and dynamic driving characteristics.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission delights with very short shift times and an intermediate (double de-clutch) throttle function for an even more emotional dynamic driving experience. It allows for a broad range of characteristics depending on the selected drive program - from highly dynamic to virtually imperceptible gear changes.

The transmission combines efficiency and dynamics. Nine gears enable the engine to remain at optimum speeds. When necessary, it shifts down to a low gear in a very short time using multiple downshifts to utilize the engine's full power. Shift characteristics are also adapted to the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs with unique calibrations.

AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: five on-road and three off-road drive programs

With the five AMG DYNAMIC SELECT programs for on-road use, "Slippery," "Comfort," "Sport," "Sport+" and "Individual," driving experiences range from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. Parameters such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering are specially tuned for each drive program. The three stages of the adaptive adjustable damping, "Comfort," "Sport" and "Sport+," can also be selected independently. The three off-road drive programs, "Sand," "Trail" and "Rock," are also available.

Unmistakable details for a distinctive interior and exterior design

Inside and out, unmistakable design elements give the all-new Mercedes-AMG G63 its unique appearance. MANUFAKTUR Hyper Blue Magno exterior paint is available exclusively for the top G-Class model. The front end is characterized by a new AMG-specific bumper with three vertical louvers in front of the air inlets, as well as stainless-steel inserts. Standard adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights illuminate the road according to the driving situation with 84 individually controllable high-performance LEDs. The taillights also feature LED technology.

The AMG crest is featured on the hood and in the exterior mirror projections for the first time, as well as the AMG fuel filler cap in silver chrome with design elements in black. Silver-painted brake calipers, perforated brake discs and new 20-inch AMG alloy wheels in five-twin-spoke design round off the exterior. Six different wheel designs in 20- to 22-inch sizes in up to three different finishes are available.

The optional AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber Package emphasizes the performance of the AMG G63. The spare wheel cover, bumper inserts and visual underride guard at the front and rear are finished in carbon fiber. The package also includes a dark chrome radiator grille, carbon design mirror housings and inserts in the exterior protective trim, spare wheel ring in black Magno/metallic, and darkened headlight housings and indicators at the front and rear.

Unique details throughout the interior underscore the dynamic character of the AMG G63. An AMG Performance steering wheel with twin-spoke design in Nappa leather with seamlessly integrated capacitive controls is fitted standard. The round AMG DRIVE UNIT steering wheel buttons with brilliant displays and intuitive operation can be used to control AMG-specific driving functions and all drive programs. AMG logos are highlighted on the steering wheel spokes, central display, door sill panels, floor mats and front seat backrests.

With the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology, the brand with the three-pointed star presents the first fully electric variant of its off-road icon. It symbolises the fusion of tradition and progress like no other. The all-new electric G-Class remains true to the model's character, retaining its angular silhouette including all iconic elements. Like the conventionally powered variants, its body is built on a ladder frame. The development team has modified and reinforced this to integrate the electric drive. Also retained is the combination of independent front suspension with double wishbones and newly developed rigid rear axle. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the ladder frame ensures a low centre of gravity. With its usable capacity of 116 kWh, it provides sufficient energy for ranges of up to 473 kilometres according to WLTP.

"Throughout its more than 45-year history, the G-Class has always used the most modern drive technology available. So, it's entirely fitting that the innovative drive concept with four individually controlled electric motors once again raises the legendary performance of our off-road icon to a new level. It even retains that familiar angular silhouette and is true to the character of our beloved 'Geländewagen'." Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer

The all-new electric G-Class sets off-road standards

The four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels develop a maximum total output of 432 kW. Together with the selectable LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction, they enable unique driving characteristics and exclusive functions. This allows G-TURN to turn the vehicle almost on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces. The G-STEERING function can deliver a significantly smaller turning circle when driving off-road. The three-speed intelligent off-road crawl function is like cruise control for off-roading - maintaining optimum propulsion while the driver focuses on navigating the terrain.

Like the tried-and-tested variants, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology has a gradeability of up to 100% on suitable surfaces. The vehicle remains stable on sideways slopes of up to 35 degrees. With a maximum fording depth of 850 millimetres, the electric G-Class outperforms its conventionally powered counterparts by 150 millimetres. The LOW RANGE off-road gearing increases propulsion with a special reduction ratio. The all-new model generates the function of conventional differential locks virtually using intelligent torque vectoring. G-ROAR brings a unique sound experience to the all-new electric G-Class. In addition to a characteristic, G-Class-specific driving sound, it includes one "aura" sound and a variety of "event" sounds.

The all-new G580 with EQ Technology follows in the tradition of the design icon

The all-new electric G-Class is immediately recognisable as a member of the enduring family line. The exterior gets a striking electric look with an optional black-panel radiator grille. A number of distinguishing features set the all-electric variant apart from the conventionally powered models. These include a slightly raised bonnet and so-called air curtains in the rear wheel-arch flares as well as the design box on the rear. In combination with new A-pillar cladding and a spoiler lip on the roof, they contribute to optimised aerodynamics.

Extensive standard equipment, additional features and a digital off-road experience

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology is equipped with the MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), a multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather and ambient lighting as standard. Optional extras include KEYLESS-GO, temperature-controlled cup holders, the Burmester® 3D surround sound system and the "transparent bonnet". The redesigned off-road control unit and the new OFFROAD COCKPIT are available as options to enhance the off-road experience with additional digital functions. The EDITION ONE, a limited-edition model with an expanded palette of standard features and exclusive design elements, is available at launch.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology will be available at launch starting at 142,621.50 euros. Prices for the EDITION ONE start at 192,524.15 euros.

The electric drive

With four individually controlled electric motors close to the wheels, the all-new electric G-Class offers unique driving characteristics both on and off road. It is the first mass-produced vehicle from the Mercedes-Benz Group with individual-wheel drive. The four motors are integrated in the ladder frame - two in each housing at the front and rear axles. They are driven via short half-shafts, meaning the rear electric motors can also be bolted to the chassis. Each of the electric motors develops a peak output of 108 kW, which adds up to a maximum total output of 432 kW. The maximum total torque is 1,164 Nm. In co-operation with ESP® and the central powertrain control (CPC), the torque is always delivered exactly where the all-new electric G-Class needs traction.

With its innovative drive concept, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. As the electric motors can provide their maximum torque from a standstill, the all-electric off-roader excels with enormous pulling power and exceptional controllability. This proves advantageous both on steep inclines and loose surfaces.

Virtual instead of mechanical: the differential locks

The all-new electric G-Class uses torque vectoring to generate virtual differential locks. This technology makes it possible to precisely meter torque to each individual wheel. As the torque builds up exactly where needed within fractions of a second, the all-new electric G-Class holds a clean, confident line up and downhill, even on the toughest terrain.

The virtual differential locks enable fully variable distribution of the drive torque among the individual wheels. The result is maximum traction with maximum flexibility without distortion when cornering. The all-new electric G-Class thus remains agile and manoeuvrable at all times, including when the virtual differential lock is active. There is no need to manually engage the differential locks via switches in the off-road control unit. Control is fully automatic. This makes it even easier to use and increases driving safety, even in difficult conditions.

The battery

It is the heart of every electric vehicle - the high-voltage battery. In the all-new electric G-Class, a two-tiered lithium-ion battery with 216 cells is installed in twelve cell modules between three cooling levels. The battery is integrated into the ladder frame made from steel up to four millimetres thick. This ensures a low centre of gravity and makes the entire vehicle significantly more rigid. To protect it from water and dirt intrusion, the battery is housed in a torsion-resistant casing. This means that the all-new electric G-Class is also ideally equipped for ambitious off-road missions. The usable capacity of the battery is 116 kWh. That gives the all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology sufficient energy for a range of up to 473 kilometres according to WLTP.

The charging components and functions

The all-new electric G-Class is capable of charging with both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). When charging with alternating current, for example at a wallbox, the on-board charger converts the current in the vehicle. It has a maximum charging capacity of up to 11 kW. For fast charging with direct current, a DC fast-charging system with a charging capacity of up to 200 kW is on board. In this case, the charging time from 10 to 80% SoC (State of Charge) is around 32 minutes.

The all-new electric G-Class has three charging programmes - "Standard," "Work" or "Home". Users can set parameters such as departure time, climate control and maximum charge level. The "Home" and "Work" charging programmes can be activated based on location. They switch on automatically as soon as the vehicle is parked at a stored charging location. Users are informed of this in MBUX.

Energy recovery during the journey via recuperation

The recuperative drive system in the all-new electric G-Class offers another way of generating energy. It converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy when coasting and braking. Depending on the recuperation level selected, the electric motors function as generators and charge the high-voltage battery while driving. Recuperation when coasting starts as soon as the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator pedal in drive setting "D" or "R".

Using the steering wheel shift paddles, the level of recuperation can also be adjusted manually in the "D" transmission selection. The following recuperation levels are available:
  • DAuto: the vehicle automatically adjusts recuperation intensity according to traffic. The ECO Assistant indicates in the instrument display when the driver should take their foot off the pedal. The vehicle then selects the appropriate recuperation intensity.
  • D+: no recuperation - the vehicle coasts and rolls freely.
  • D: normal recuperation
  • D-: strong recuperation with increased vehicle deceleration during coasting
  • D--: maximum recuperation with maximum vehicle deceleration during coasting
Multi-stage high-voltage safety concept

Mercedes-Benz has developed a multi-stage high-voltage protection concept for its electric vehicles to prevent electric shocks and high-energy short circuits. It comprises eight essential elements for the safety of the battery and all components with a voltage level of more than 60 volts. This includes, for example, a self-monitoring high-voltage system that switches off automatically in the event of a serious collision.

Special underbody protection

Underbody protection is essential for every off-road vehicle. The all-new electric G-Class is no exception. In the event of a ground strike when driving off road, the battery must not suffer any physical harm. In addition, important components on the underside of the body must be protected from damage caused by stones, dust and sand. The focus during development of the skid plate was therefore on a high level of protection. The team also considered the effects on crash behaviour, aerodynamics and aeroacoustics during the development process.

The underbody protection on the all-new electric G-Class is made from an intelligent material mix that includes carbon. It increases rigidity compared to alternatives made from steel or aluminium. It also ensures long-lasting corrosion protection and saves weight. The underbody panel is 26 millimetres thick, weighs 57.6 kilograms and is attached to the ladder frame with more than 50 steel screws. A comparable steel component is around three times heavier. A one-millimetre layer of stone-chip protection is applied to the underside.

Suspension and transmission

The all-new electric G-Class brings the off-road qualities of the G-Class into the era of electric mobility. In some aspects, the electric version even surpasses the conventionally powered models - in fording depth, for example. The ladder frame has been modified and reinforced for the electric model, retaining the combination of double-wishbone independent front suspension and rigid rear axle. The rear axle is a De Dion design and has been completely redeveloped. The electric motors are attached to the ladder frame and connected to the wheels via dual-joint shafts. The advantage of this is that the camber does not change during compression. Double-universal-joint driveshafts transmit the propulsion and incorporate sliding joints to equalise the length. The following off-road qualities speak for themselves:
  • Up to 100% gradeability on suitable surfaces
  • Ground clearance between the axles of at least 250 mm
  • Maximum fording depth of 850 mm for water and mud
  • Stable driving on sideward slopes of up to 35°
  • Approach angle of 32° and departure angle of 30.7°
  • Breakover angle of 20.3°
The all-new electric G-Class is equipped as standard with the same adaptive adjustable damping used in the conventionally powered variants. The active dampers compensate for uneven ground better than passive dampers. This ensures even more off-road confidence. With roll and pitch stabilisation, the system continuously regulates the damper characteristics depending on the driving situation and reduces body movements. The components of the adaptive adjustable damping system are designed to withstand extreme conditions such as surging water, fording, stone chipping and dirt.

LOW RANGE: the off-road gear reduction of the all-new electric G-Class

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology has a switchable LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction. Each motor close to the wheel has its own transmission, which is shifted centrally. This ensures the independence of the motors. At each axle are two electric motors, their gearboxes and a double inverter in a shared housing. This configuration facilitates an off-road reduction ratio that equips the electric off-roader for use on difficult terrain. It ensures maximum torque and smooth temperature management. The HIGH RANGE on-road setting is also available, guaranteeing maximum range.

In the "Rock" driving programme, drivers can activate the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction via a switch in the off-road control unit. This activates a reduction ratio (2:1), which increases the drive torque. Handling and response characteristics are then optimised for powerful excursions on unsurfaced, difficult terrain with steep inclines and declines. Top speed is restricted to 85 km/h. The intelligent off-road crawl function is switched on automatically and always active.

Exclusive off-road functions, unique sound experience and digital off-road experience

The off-road capabilities of the G-Class have always set the highest standards. This also applies to the all-new electric G-Class. Its innovative drive concept enables exclusive functions for driving off the beaten track.

Exclusively for the all-new electric G-Class: G-TURN, G-STEERING and intelligent off-road crawl function

With the G-TURN, drivers can turn the all-new electric G-Class almost on the spot. The vehicle performs up to two complete vehicle turns in the desired direction on unpaved or loose surfaces. This not only looks spectacular but can also be helpful when driving off-road - for example, if an obstacle ahead makes it impossible to continue forward. The four independently driven wheels can rotate the vehicle to the left or right as required. To do this, the wheels on the right and left sides of the vehicle turn in opposite directions. To start the function, the vehicle must be stationary on a level surface with the doors closed, the front wheels in the straight-ahead position and the brake pedal depressed. In addition, the "D" transmission setting must be engaged, the "Rock" driving programme selected and the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction switched on. Only then can drivers activate the function using the corresponding button on the off-road control unit. They can select the desired direction of rotation by pulling and holding the left or right steering wheel shift paddle. To start the G-TURN, they must then hold the steering wheel, release the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal. After two complete vehicle revolutions, G-TURN is automatically cancelled. Drivers can also cancel the function manually at any time by releasing the steering wheel shift paddle or the accelerator pedal.

G-STEERING can significantly reduce the turning circle of the all-new electric G-Class when driving off-road or on loose surfaces. This is achieved through targeted control of the drive torque at the individual driven wheels, with the vehicle turning around the inside rear wheel. The function can thus eliminate the need for multi-point turns in certain situations - for example in bends or other tight spaces. Drivers can activate G-STEERING by pressing the corresponding button on the off-road control unit when the "D" transmission setting is engaged, the "Rock" drive programme is selected and LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction is switched on. This function is active up to a speed of 25 km/h.

The intelligent off-road crawl function provides drivers of the all-new electric G-Class with additional support when driving off-road. It ensures ideal propulsion even on loose surfaces, maintaining a pre-set speed - and thus functions as a kind of cruise control for off-road driving. This allows drivers to concentrate fully on the optimum driving line and any obstacles without having to simultaneously balance the brake and accelerator. However, the function can always be overridden with the brake or accelerator pedal if desired.

The intelligent off-road crawl function is always active when the LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction is engaged. Drivers can select the target speed in three levels using the steering wheel shift paddles. The current status is shown on the driver display. The following crawl speeds are available:
  • Slow crawl: the vehicle maintains a speed of around 2 km/h uphill, on the level or downhill.
  • Variable crawl: the vehicle maintains walking speed uphill and on the level. On downhill gradients of 10 to 20%, drivers can use the accelerator pedal to increase the target speed to around 14 km/h and use the brake pedal to again reduce it to walking speed. The vehicle maintains the current target speed by releasing the accelerator or brake pedal.
  • Fast crawl: the vehicle maintains a speed of around 8 km/h uphill and on the level. Downhill, the intelligent off-road crawl function slows the vehicle down via recuperation depending on the gradient. This can increase the vehicle speed, as no final speed is specified.
G-ROAR: this is what the all-new electric G-Class sounds like

G-ROAR brings a unique sound experience to the all-new electric G-Class. The characteristic driving sound is inspired by the model family's emotional V8 sounds. It provides an impressive acoustic accompaniment to the acceleration of the all-new electric G-Class. Its deep bass and sonorous tones deliberately set it apart from the sound of other all-electric models from the brand with the three-pointed star. Drivers can influence the sound with their choice of driving programme. While it's rather restrained in "Comfort", for example, it develops a powerful and emotional sound in "Sport".

G-ROAR also includes an "aura" and a variety of "event" sounds. The "aura" sound can already be heard around the vehicle when drivers approach the all-new electric G-Class and unlock the doors. The "event" sounds can be heard when closing the vehicle door after getting in, switching the motors on and off and upon opening the door at the end of a journey. After leaving the vehicle, the "aura" sound can be heard again - for up to one minute, or until the vehicle is locked. G-ROAR also provides acoustic accompaniment to the start of the charging process.

The event package for two also includes an exclusive dinner, an overnight stay in a hotel in the centre of Graz with breakfast and a personal shuttle service. Those wishing to book G-Class factory delivery should contact their authorised Mercedes-Benz sales partner.

The driver assistance systems

The all-new electric G-Class already has numerous latest-generation advanced assistance and safety systems on board as standard. They use numerous sensors, cameras and radar to monitor the traffic and vehicle surroundings. This allows them to noticeably relieve the driver in many everyday situations.
  • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC helps the driver to maintain a safe distance, among other things. The system automatically adapts the speed to slower vehicles in front. The desired target distance can be set in several levels. Other functions include reacting to stationary vehicles, automatic restart and automatic speed takeover. This support is particularly beneficial to drivers in flowing and slow-moving traffic. In combination with route-based speed adjustment, the system can automatically reduce speed before bends, junctions, roundabouts, toll stations and exits and then accelerate again.
  • Active Steering Assist uses moderate steering interventions to help drivers follow the lane at speeds of up to 160 km/h. This is a major stress reliever, especially on monotonous routes.
  • Active Brake Assist uses the sensors installed in the vehicle to register a risk of collision with vehicles travelling in front or crossing. In the event of an imminent collision, the system can visually and acoustically warn the driver. If braking is too weak, it can also provide support by increasing the braking force accordingly and initiate autonomous emergency braking if there is no reaction.
  • Active Emergency Stop Assist brakes the vehicle to a standstill in its own lane if it recognises that the driver is no longer actively driving for a prolonged period. In addition, a brief electric tensioning of the seatbelt by PRE-SAFE® and a brief brake jolt serve as final warnings before the brakes are applied.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist helps drivers to stay in the correct lane. Using a camera, it recognises when the vehicle drives over lane markings and road edges. In this way, the system can help ensure drivers don't unintentionally leave their lane. If there is a risk of collision with recognised road users in the adjacent lane, for example overtaking or oncoming vehicles, the system can also react with steering intervention and warnings.
  • Active Blind Spot Assist can give a visual warning of side collisions at a speed of around 10 km/h and also an audible warning when the indicator is activated. In addition, the exit warning function can signal prior to exiting that a vehicle (including bicycles) is passing in the critical area when the vehicle is stationary.
  • ATTENTION ASSIST can recognise typical signs of driver fatigue and inattention. The system can thus contribute to road safety, particularly on night journeys and long journeys. As soon as it recognises typical signs of fatigue, it switches on visual and acoustic warning signals and prompts the driver to take a break.
  • The Parking Package with 360° camera provides support when parking and manoeuvring the electric G-Class. The virtual overhead view of the 360° camera shows the current vehicle position on the media display. In combination with the visual and acoustic cues of the Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, drivers stay in control even in confusing situations. The system can actively assist with reverse parking as well as recognise suitable parking spaces at a speed of up to 35 km/h.
  • The PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system can recognise critical driving situations at an early stage and initiate protective measures as a precaution. These include, for example, reversible belt tensioning or the automatic closing of open side windows or the sliding glass roof. Depending on the equipment, the electrically adjustable front passenger seat can also move into a more favourable position in the event of a crash.
  • PRE-SAFE® Sound can prepare the occupants' ears for the stress caused by the noise generated in an accident. In the event of an imminently dangerous situation, a special sound chip generates a noise via the loudspeakers. In many cases, the noise triggers a natural protective reflex - the tiny stapedius muscle in the ear contracts briefly and dampens the connection between the eardrum and the inner ear.
  • The Traffic Sign Assist keeps an eye on the applicable speed regulations and reminds you of them. In addition to conventionally signposted speed limits, the system also recognises gantry signs and roadworks signs.

I absolutely love it. Couple of comments though...

1.) What a dumb fucking name. Why not just call it EQG like all the others are and also like everyone was expecting it to be called???
2.) Why are the motors placed close to the wheels with short half shafts? That just messes with wheel articulation off road. Longer half shafts = more flexy
3.) That price is insane, hopefully these depreciate like the EQS and EQE as they are all going to be lease specials lol.
4.) 470kW = ~580hp, guessing there will be an AMG version very soon.
